New Shuttle.. New Way of Tatting

This is my new Pop-A-Bobbin Shuttle that I bought from Sally at Tat's Heaven.  Made from Cherry wood, it has a pop out bobbin and hook on one end.
You may have noticed that there are also three butterflys in the picture.  Now these may seem like simple butterflys to you, but two of them have been tatted in a different way from my usual method.  I taught myself to tat from books, a great many years ago and had never seen anyone else tat, in the flesh, so to speak.  I tat, going all around the houses with my shuttle and it is a little slow. I have watched tatters on YouTube, and noticed that they seem to, not only tat much quicker than I do but also use a 'slip and slide' method.
With my new trusty shuttle and the help of my friend Jane, I have been learning to tat this new method, and two of the butterflys are tatted in this way... Can you tell the difference?  I can't and I tatted them!!  I need to practice more and hope to speed up but it is a good start.

  1. I can't see the difference either. Well done. Training the brain ain't easy. I did it years ago as I used to go 'round the houses' with my shuttle too. Took somebody I taught to teach me a better way!!!! WELL DONE. So pleased you like the shuttle too.

  6. Wow, when I started I "threw the thread" (which is what I presume you mean by going "round the houses") around my loom hand. Nearly 12 years of that before a lady at a weaving shop caught sight of me and offered to show me a more fluid method. I thought I was the only one who started that way!

Your butterflies look perfect and I can't tell the difference between them. Great job!

And ooohh, that cherry Pop-a-Bobbin shuttle is so pretty. I hear it fits perfectly in the hand. Do tell us more about your experience with it.

  7. Thank you, Joy, it is very difficult to explain the method, but it is holding the shuttle in between index finger and thumb and sliding it to and fro under and over the thread.

  9. I really like this color of wood for this shuttle. I think I will order a cherry one when Jane gets more in her shop. I have heard so many good things about this shuttle.
